Sgraffito (Italian word ‘to scratch’) is a surface decorating technique in pottery that is produced by applying one or more layers of colour (underglaze, slip or engobes) on to leather hard clay, then scratching and carving patterns, textures and illustrations to reveal the contrasting colour of the clay underneath.

This ball stylus tool will enable you to create fine and precise incised and carved images on the surface of your leather hard pots, adding more dimension and vibrancy to your pottery. Also useful for carving dry clay and plaster.
Fine and detailed carvings
This tool has 2 ball styluses of different sizes – one at each end. The larger ball is about 1mm diamter, and the smaller ball is about 0.5mm diameter. You’ll find them perfect for carving and incising detailed fine lines through your clay surface, or through glazes applied to bisqueware. A stylus tool is also useful for texturising your leather hard surfaces, tracing patterns, and embossing.
